Andhra Pradesh is recognized as a national leader in HIV control by achieving nearly 77% of its HIV management target set by NACO. The HIV-positive rate has significantly dropped, and new cases have reduced from approximately 25,000 in 2015-16 to a forecasted 13,383 by 2024-25. Successful awareness campaigns and treatment programs have also greatly decreased AIDS-related deaths. With continued investments and commitment, Andhra Pradesh aims to meet the United Nations AIDS goals.

Andhra Pradesh has emerged as a leader in the battle against HIV in India, being recognized for its significant progress in controlling HIV cases. The State AIDS Control Society (APSACS) has accomplished an impressive 76.96% success in managing HIV cases, nearing the National AIDS Control Organisation's (NACO) goal of 80%. As we approach World AIDS Day on December 1, Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav highlighted that the HIV-positive rate in Andhra Pradesh has dramatically dropped from 2.34% in 2015-16 to a mere 0.58% projected by 2024-25.

The trend in new HIV cases is also noteworthy. In 2015-16, there were almost 25,000 new HIV cases, but this number fell to 21,982 by 2018-19 and is expected to decline further to approximately 13,383 by 2024-25. This reduction can be attributed to extensive awareness programs and initiatives promoting safe practices such as condom use. The significant decrease in AIDS-related deaths by 88.72% since 2010 emphasizes the positive impact of these efforts.

Among pregnant women, the HIV prevalence has also seen a decline from 0.10% in 2015-16 to 0.04% by 2024-25, indicating successful prevention efforts undertaken in this demographic. Despite being second in total cases nationally, with 275,528 reported cases compared to Maharashtra's 362,392, Andhra Pradesh has made substantial advancements in preventing new infections.

Currently, 42,008 AIDS patients are receiving pension support, showcasing the government’s commitment to caring for those affected. Furthermore, the State is on a trajectory to meet the United Nations' AIDS targets for identifying HIV-positive individuals, providing necessary treatments, and reducing viral loads. At the national level, India has achieved an overall progress rate of 81%, while Andhra Pradesh outpaces with 86% completion of stated goals.

The financial commitment to managing HIV patients is considerable, with the government investing between ₹35,000 to ₹40,000 annually for each patient. At present, 238,760 patients are receiving monthly medication through 59 anti-retroviral therapy (ART) centers located throughout the state. This regular medication has vastly improved the quality of life for many patients.

The first reported HIV case in Andhra Pradesh dates back to 2004 in Guntur, and, courtesy of consistent treatment, this patient continues to lead a healthy life today, reinforcing the importance of ongoing support in combating HIV effectively.
