Andre Russell has announced his retirement from the IPL ahead of the 2026 auction, opting not to sign with another franchise. Instead, he will join Kolkata Knight Riders as their 'power coach.' Throughout his 12 seasons in the IPL, Russell was highly successful, but recent performance declines prompted KKR to release him. He expressed a desire to leave a lasting legacy and emphasized the importance of staying connected to KKR. Russell's impact on the league is undeniable, and he aims to nurture future talent in his new coaching role.

In a surprising announcement ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, Andre Russell, the renowned West Indian all-rounder, has declared his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 37-year-old player, who was recently released by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), shared his decision through an Instagram post, confirming that he will not sign with another team. Instead, he is set to join the KKR coaching staff as their 'power coach' for the upcoming season.

Russell reflected on his decision, stating that retirement is about leaving a lasting legacy rather than fading into obscurity. He expressed the desire to step away while fans still see potential in him, rather than waiting until it was too late.

Over an impressive twelve-season career in the IPL, Russell proved himself as a formidable player, having participated in 140 matches. He scored a total of 2,651 runs at an astounding strike rate of 174.18 and took 123 wickets with an economy rate of 9.51, boasting exceptional bowling figures of 5 for 15. Russell debuted in the IPL in 2012 with the Delhi Daredevils before joining Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014, where he played 133 games and contributed to the team’s two title wins in 2014 and 2024.

He has been recognized with the IPL Most Valuable Player award twice, in 2015 and 2019, showcasing his prowess as one of the league's most intimidating finishers. Notably, he ranks seventh on the all-time list for IPL sixes with a total of 223, trailing behind legends such as Chris Gayle, Rohit Sharma, and MS Dhoni.

Despite his illustrious career, recent seasons have seen a decline in his performance, sparking concerns about his fitness and overall form. During the IPL 2025 season, Russell scored only 167 runs and took eight wickets at an economy of 11.94. This downturn likely played a role in KKR's choice to release him, thereby freeing up INR 12 crore ahead of the auction.

Russell also shared his emotional journey, revealing feelings of discomfort at the thought of wearing any jersey other than KKR's purple and gold, leading to sleepless nights. He expressed gratitude towards KKR’s management, including Mr. Venky Mysore and Mr. Shah Rukh Khan, for their continued support and affection, emphasizing the importance of remaining in a familiar environment.

As he transitions into a coaching role, Andre Russell aims to share his extensive experience with KKR and contribute to the next generation of players. His retirement marks the end of a remarkable chapter in IPL history, yet begins a new venture as he intends to shape the future of the sport.
