Leica has unveiled the Q3 Monochrom, a monochrome camera in its Q-series that boasts a 60-megapixel sensor without a color Bayer filter. Offering improved sharpness and noise performance, it also supports shooting at multiple resolutions and recording 8K monochromatic videos. Retaining a sleek design, the camera includes advanced features like C2PA content authenticity and the beloved Summilux lens. Available December 20, it is priced at $7,790.

Leica has reintroduced monochrome photography to its Q-series with the debut of the Q3 Monochrom. This model primarily resembles the original Q3 but incorporates a unique 60-megapixel sensor that lacks a color Bayer filter. This design modification enhances image sharpness and significantly improves noise performance, according to Leica.

The Q3 Monochrom is a follow-up to the Q2 Monochrom, which was introduced in November 2020 at a price of $5,995. This latest release not only carries forward the tradition of monochrome imaging but also offers a substantial increase in resolution capabilities.

The most notable upgrade in the Q3 Monochrom is its dedicated sensor that solely captures black and white images. Remarkably, it preserves Leica's Triple Resolution technology, allowing users to shoot images at 60, 36, or 18-megapixel resolutions while maintaining an ISO range from 100 to 200,000. Additionally, the camera can record monochromatic video at resolutions up to 8K. By omitting both the color Bayer filter and the low-pass filter, the Q3 Monochrom is engineered to produce photos with remarkable sharpness, exceptional tonal depth, and impressive dynamic range.

In keeping with Leica's aesthetic, the design of the Q3 Monochrom is understated and simplistic. It replaces the classic red “Leica” dot with the word “Monochrom” elegantly engraved on its top. The body features a distinct leatherette covering designed to evoke the feel of the M series cameras, providing a fresh yet familiar grip for enthusiasts.

For the first time in the Q-series, the Q3 Monochrom supports C2PA content authenticity, a feature absent in the original Q3 and Q3 43 models. This allows images to include a digital signature that complies with the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), providing a means of verifying their origin and any subsequent alterations.

It's important to note that the shift to monochrome image capture results in the elimination of the phase detection layer on the sensor. Consequently, the Q3 Monochrom now relies solely on contrast-based detection for focusing.

Beyond these enhancements, the camera is equipped with the renowned Leica Summilux 28 f/1.7 ASPH lens, capable of toggling between standard and macro shooting modes, achieving a closest focus distance of 17 centimeters. The Q3 Monochrom can shoot at a pace of up to 15 frames per second, features a 5.76-megapixel OLED viewfinder, a tilting touch display, and is rated IP52 for dust and moisture resistance. It utilizes a single UHS-II SD card slot for storage.

The Q3 Monochrom is compatible with existing accessories from the Leica Q3 lineup. Additionally, Leica is set to release a handgrip that supports wireless charging, a matching leatherette cover, a red filter, along with a selection of stylish carrying straps. Customers can purchase the Leica Q3 Monochrom starting November 20, with a retail price of $7,790.
